Man is the only being in creation that possesses free will. While everything else follows cause and effect, man at certain key points of his life has the power to change his destiny drastically. Free will does not mean that we have the choice between coffee or tea. Most things in our lives are governed by our hormones, chemistries, influences of our surroundings, etc. In this realm we couldn't state that man has a choice. Even when we see addicted people who fight as hard as they can against drinking, smoking, or whatever, we often see that the temptation in the end prevails. We might develop a certain resistant force in physicality, but when temptation pulls stronger than our resistance, also here we cannot say that man really has a free will.
Free will only exists on a soul level. This means that at certain points in our lives, God is testing us or is giving us big choices if we want to follow the easy or the hard path. The easy path is mostly the one that brings us a short-term reward, but in the long term, we stay unfulfilled. Intuition is a higher sense that we still have to develop so that we're always able to do the right thing. Once we're in alignment with the light, we always know what to do, even when things seem to be impossible on a physical level. This necessitates that we have to go completely against our own logic. Often we have to confront a Red Sea in our own life. Only when a certain man of Israel went into the Red Sea until its waters reached his nostrils did the sea part.
There are two kinds of screens or curtains in our lives. One we can practice voluntarily, and the other that is placed before us involuntarily. Every time we restrict our most selfish desires, we open a space for the light to come in. Often such desires can be as well fear or anxiety. The root of fear is the illusion of being a separate self. When we only act out of fear or lack of fulfillment, the universe sooner or later will place a curtain before our eyes. This means that suddenly big chaos is coming in, or we lose precious things in our lives. When we instead adopt the properties of the next higher spiritual level, we, on our own, create a curtain that from now on is reflecting the light upwards so that this reflected light can serve as a new vessel for reception. This might sound complicated, but all it means is that we restrict the desire to receive for the self alone and from now on use our talents, gifts, and faculties in order to bestow.
This can be compared to a host and a guest. The host wants the guest to enjoy his meal. Initially the guest, out of shame, rejects the meal because he doesn't want to accept it for free. Only when he sees that the host wants him to enjoy certain dishes does the guest begin to accept his offerings, because he sees that his reception delights the host. So it is with God and his creation. We're here to receive everything that is offered, but we must develop a sense and intention to receive for the sake of God.
